A CLOSER LOOK AT DATA WINDOWS

We now take a look at the menus and tools available with a data window . The toolbar is as shown below, and each tool in numbered for reference.

  1. This tool is the usual "PRINT" tool, which allows you to setup the printer of your choice, and then print all of the data in the Dataset being displayed. This may include many more lines of data than are currently visible in the Dataset window. It will be appropriately labeled and formatted before being printed.
  1. This is the "SAVE" tool. It allows you to save the current Dataset , assuming that it was already opened as a previously saved set (not a temporary computed Dataset), and assuming that it is to be saved under its current name.
  1. 4.   5.   These are the usual "CUT", "COPY", and "PASTE" tools, respectively. They allow you to cut and/or copy columns, rows, or blocks of data which you have selected by holding down the right mouse button and dragging, and to paste data into this data window that may have been copied or cut from any data window.
  1. This tool is the "GRAPH WIZARD" tool. It opens the Graph Wizard window discussed previously, and lets you design or edit plotting formats for the Dataset. These formats will then be attached to the Dataset, and saved with it, if it is saved.
  1. This tool opens the Point and Figure wizard, and allows plotting of point and figure charts of various types.

At the bottom of each data window are tabs which illustrate: the dataset as a spreadsheet, a default plot, and notes relevent to the data.

Menus in Dataset windows

The File menu drops down as shown below. The first option is to "Save" the Dataset, in exactly the same way as is done by the SAVE tool. This option will not be available for 'temporary datasets' created by fdc, since these do not correspond to data saved on the local computer. The second option is "Save As" which allows any current Dataset, however produced, to be saved under a name you choose. If a portion of the data has been selected, that selection can be saved in a new window by the third option. Finally, the "Print" option works just like the PRINT tool.

Next we see the ‘Edit’ menu in drop down form.

The "Cut", "Copy", and "Paste" selections are identical with the same tools on the toolbar. In addition, there are "Insert" and "Delete" items that allow rows or columns to be inserted into the Dataset window at the current line or deleted from the Dataset window according to the number of rows or columns selected by the mouse. The "Clear" item clears the selected rows or columns of the Dataset window. The next two options allow rows or columns to be inserted or deleted, or blocks of data to be deleted.

The last option packages the data for export to a spread sheet or word processor, by adding a first data column consisting of the dates.

Finally, the Help menu displays this section on tools and menus associated with the Dataset window.
